If you don’t know Nunes Garcia’s music – look him up. It was only by chance hearing part of the Missa Pastoril on Radio 3, while waiting at the Freshfield level crossing (as many of us do, frequently) – that David searched online, and found that the Vocal Scores are available in the Public Domain. And further – on contacting the editor, we were sent all the instrumental parts for the orchestral accompaniment. The orchestration is slightly unusual, in that it lacks violins – so finding a work to partner it with was a challenge. But not really – because Fauré’s famous and popular Requiem is similar enough to make it viable. Then add in the Cantique de Jean Racine and a couple of other little gems, and we have a magnificent concert to start the new choir year.
